JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Religious Education is a key ministerial leader responsible for administering parish faith formation programs for children, youth, and adults, including sacramental preparation. This role requires a practicing Catholic who actively upholds and models the teachings of the Catholic Church. 

 

The DRE has a knowledge of Church documents, origins and development of the Church’s teachings, and the principles of catechesis.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •      Coordinates and oversees the development and implementation of ongoing education/formation for the Parish to promote effective catechesis. Familiarizes Parish Catechetical staff with the content of the Church's catechetical documents and implements the principals of catechesis in parish programs:
  •      Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate volunteer catechists and religious education staff  including providing in-service meetings at least twice a year.
  •      Prepares the yearly calendar for the PSR schedule and designates special Christmas, Palm Sunday, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmations.
  •      Coordinates OCIA and OCIC by providing an in-person director as well as a provider of online services as needed by individuals interested in learning more about the Catholic Church.
  • Assists participating families in becoming registered members of the Parish
  •      Provides sacramental preparation, logistics, and retreats for sacraments such as First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  •      Ensure those receiving sacraments have completed all paperwork for proper recording. 
  •      With the assistance of volunteers, organize summer education programs such as but not limited to Vacation Bible School and adult bible study programs.
  •      Consult the Pastor in reviewing materials, designing programs, and oversee the purchase of catechetical and religious education materials. Provides resources upon request.
  •      In consultation with the Pastor and catechetical ministers, develops and implements policies and Diocesan guidelines for religious education and sacramental preparation faithful to the Church's catechetical documents.
  •      Meet with families for Baptism preparations and Baptism class schedules. Schedules Baptisms with the Pastor.
  •      Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate mentor couples for those preparing for marriage and coordinates with the liturgist for wedding ceremonies.
  •      Develop individualized programs for parishioners with special religious education needs.
  •      Work with the Pastor, Bookkeeper and Finance Council to prepare and manage the Office of Religious Education budget.
  •      Maintains regular communications with the parish catechetical staff, participants, and parents as needed.
  •      Maintains membership and participation in appropriate National, Regional, and Diocesan catechetical organizations as required.
  •      Encourage Parish Religious Education catechists to obtain Basic Catechetical Certification according to the policy set by the Diocese.
  •      Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for this job.
  •      Serve as Safe Environmental Coordinator
  •      Insure that all parish volunteers have the requisite safe environmental training and are in compliance with the Protecting God’s Children clearances and trainings
  •      Work with other key leaders of ministries to ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and procedures
  •      Attend required Diocesan meetings and mandated DRE trainings.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  •       Compliance with BCI background checks and completion of Protecting God's Children prior to beginning employment. Must be a member of a Roman Catholic parish community with an active and deep Roman Catholic faith.
  •       Adherence to Catholic Church Teaching statement.
  •       Ability to self-manage multiple tasks and meet project expectations and deadlines.
  •       Ability to work with others in a collaborative team environment in addition to working and relating well with other staff and parishioners.
  •       Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  •       Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  •       Ability to maintain high ethical standards in all matters.
  •       Willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
  •       High school degree or equivalent and an advanced degree or certification in Religious Education of Catholic theology or equivalent.
  •       Minimum of 3 years of parish religious education or similar experience; familiarity with principles and dimensions of adult faith formation, catechist formation, young adult ministry is preferred; proven administrative skills including interpersonal relations, conflict resolution, management and supervision, budget preparation and collaborative minister.
  •       Ability to do light work: Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force   frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodations.
